Think of a C major scale with the notes C D E F G A B and C AKA the C Ionian mode.  The pentatonic scale has only five notes--omits the 4 and the 7 of the scale. For example: C Major pentatonic notes are: C  D  E (NO F) G  A (NO B) C.  The relative minor pentatonic is A Minor pentatonic--Notes are A C D E G.  Hope this helps.

What I like about pentatonic scales is that they remove the 2 notes in the scale that follow another note by 1/2 step. Removes any possibility of disonance or tension when riffing over
the chord being played.
