GuitarPlayerU

Hello everyone, Drew and I are looking for new ideas for the next contest. If you have any suggestions on what type of contest you would like us to have and what types of prizes you would like to see, we would appreciate it!

Thanks!
Keith

Hi there;-)

I'm searchin for a whole, step-by-step, Jazz school for beginners. So, if you can do so, i'd really appreciate your help.

Have a nice time. Bye;-)

I went to my local library and picked up a book with CD called Intermediate Jazz by Jody Fisher. It got me started. The library usually has several books, DVDs etc. on guitar instruction.

Have several prizes. Jazz real books, Guitar Instruction videos, Band in a box a yamaha classical guitar, Taylor 414 CE , Gibson ES 175, electronic tuners, metronomes, elixir guitar strings free admission to a GPU seminar guitar camp.

Free trip to GPU for a seminar- flight and room included--would be cool to meet other GPU folks

Re: contest - how about a multi-stage contest to create a GPU theme song, with member participation (voting). The aim would be to find an entertaining song that would make people visit the site and tell them a little about the community/site. You could put a time limit on it say 60 - 90 seconds.

It could go something like this:

- stage 1 - song lyrics (people send in their ideas for the GPU song) the more entertaining the better (e.g. catchy and/or funny - but not offensive). Keith and his panel of experts could cull the entries and then post the short-listed entries for the community to vote on (1 vote per member - this might encourage the entrants to bring more people into the community too)

- stage 2 - once the winner of stage 1 is decided - the lyrics could be posted and then it would be open to all to prepare the music for the theme song and perform it (to be fair you could have 3 levels - 'beginner', intermediate' and 'advanced' - since most people also have this in their profile). As before, Keith and co. could screen/cull and then everyone else could vote on the shortlist.

- you could also have a prize for best overall - combo of lyrics, music and performance - overall theme.

You might also get collaboration between members - and award a best group prize.

If you didn't get too many entries you could post them all.

Prizes?? guitar care packs, t-shirts, e-learning song books (choice of music styles and levels), sweet guitars like before.

Could be very amusing - lots of fun.

I am with Michelle, this is a very good idea for all the members, because everyone can participate in each of the levels.

For prizes if you could give something that really make you feel part of the GP Community it would be nice.

Hi Keith

I think that a good compotition would be to design a guitar. This could include the body shape, head shape, paint finishes, graphics etc.

Also I cant really tell you what prize to give out it should be a surprise, although a nice sports car would be nice and maby some girls to bring me drinks!

Look forward to hearing what you decide,

I think Michele's idea is cool. But i was thinking of a plot to a Guitar Players U advertisement on Youtube. Participants could come up with plots or ideas and we can come up with an original content video that could be posted on Youtube to encourage people to come to this site.

Wow a lot of great ideas !!! I am all for group votes ...Like we all vote for a GPU Dejay for one that would be nice gift....Then Vote for things Like what Michele said.....And the Utube add sounds good too...hehehe I feel for you Keith and Drew you have have to pick the idea :)
Member voting is the way to go I think :) the point system is good but need more interraction between members...
Take care

I say forget prizes and all that BS. This site is supposed to be about learning and there are videos that do that. There is no way to measure what is being learned. I don't understand why there is no backing tracks posted and people do what they can with it. Have different levels and the more experienced players help by giving constructive criticism. Point out the good and bad stuff. Not forgetting the encouragement part.

That has it's bad side though. Some may not like hearing what they need to improve on. So it's a little tricky doing that. The other aspect there is doing the recording. Some may not know what to do there. Another thread about how to use various recording software might be helpful as well. For those that can't afford new would need to know of the free options like Reaper and I think there is another. I'm a Sonar 8PE user and can help there.

Another thing that may be fun is doing cover tunes of whatever song in whatever genre. I like most styles and like making cover tunes for fun so why not share.

Whatever you guys think.

You know you could have competitions without prizes too - just for the fun of it. I guess it depends why you're having the competitions but if it is to create a sense of excitement then you can do it without giving things away.

I like Robert's idea of cover songs. You could set an assignment and see what people come up with.
