Hello Everybody
Several new members are asking about finger picking
and where to go and learn more. I send them to this

Thanks

Joe - that is a straight forward question with an answer that varies between one song to another or style or player. There is time I like to add some melody or an improvistion off the chords. There is times i add a bass line or passing chords. As player who performs fingerstyle guitar professionally I suggest listen to many different fingerstyle guitarists and develop something that appeals to you. You can't go wrong by learning to do chord melody. Check out the link below of my videos. You might not like the style but you get inspired by something.

Hi,Great information sharing. Wish I found this sooner.
QUESTION, Is there a specific pattern of notes to play in between the cords of a song or is it personal preference. The only songs I ever learned was from sheet music. I need to be more spontaneous and original.

Hey Ed, I noticed no one has answered your question. What to do next is keep reading comments and comment yourself. If you have questions about something, ask, someone will have the answer for you. Have fun.

I learned how to fingerpick on a dreadnaught. Now I play both classical and steel string guitars. I have always found fingerpicking to be relatively easy, in general. Yes, the stirngs are farther apart on a classical, but I don't find that it makes much difference to me. I think it just comes down to what you become used to. I should mention that I only use light strings on any steel stringed guitar I fingerpick. I don't personally see any effect on my nails, either way. However, everyone's nails are different.

The classical guitar was designed for fingerpicking. That is why the body shape is the way it is, and the spacing of strings. So that you could put your arm over the guitar and you could get your fingers between the strings to do a rest or free stroke. There are many great fingerpickers who use steel strings, but most of them have a wider fingerboard and use lighter strings. And then there is a nail issue. Steel string guitar tear my nails to pieces.

I have to agree, it's easier to learn to fingerpick using a classical guitar. That been said, one can still learn to fingerpick on guitars with thinner necks, it just takes a little more practice and finesse. Nothing is impossible! ;)

I use a nylon string classical guitar ( mine is a hybrid ) because the strings are wider apart, due to the fact that I developed carpal tunnel on my right hand when i was using a steel string arch top. I made the switch 10 years ago. When I use my steel string guitars, I use a pick; otherwise, I am in pain for day if i use my fingers.
