I use a metronome to practice my flatpicking and crosspicking. I was never into bluegrass until I tried to play it. Not the strummin,' but the pickin.' Now I'm hooked. I bought a Mel Bay book taught by Eric Tompson. I take a song and figure out the timings and up/down strokes. Then I t6ake the song measure by measure using the metronome. Then it's just practice increasing the beats/minute each day. I am still working on a song called "cross-eyed fiddler." Started at 60 beats/minute and am up to 108 beats/minute. This song however is played at 181 beats/minute. This is the only way I have found that shows results. The secret to increasing speed is to not deviate from the picking pattern you've chosen and to get the timing right when starting to learn the song. If you play a down-up-down-up one time and then do a up-down-up-down the next time for the same four beats in a song, then improvement is impossible for the fast songs.

I would sure like to hear some input from flat pickers as to how they practice to improve their picking skills and what type of music they play. Haven't been any recent additions to this site. I am always ready to learn from and listen to other's ideas.

Fender doesn't make guitar picks. They contract out and have their name on the picks. So the manufacturer usually isn't an issue. I use medium picks with some flex for rhythm and acoustic. But for lead I use harder picks for a clear defined sound. But it isn't what I use or somebody else uses. Buy some light, medium and hard, use them all and find one that works for you. It's not a big deal.
