I use the Major pentatonic boxes as referrence points only. When I prepare for building a solo I look at a number of things.
Key of couse, The progression, and amount of time I have ,measures.
We all have weak points when it comes to guitar, because we all have strong points. And we tend to stay with what is comfortable.
No,Playing s 40 year old clapton tune note for note is not where is it at for me. There is so much more on the guitar fretboard than to stick to one box.
That is why I mention boxes, Without having this ingraved into your subconsious, Those are building blocks and you are right. You are not going to pat your foot much listening to a C major scale. I have however stopped years ago trying to play other guitar players lead. It is much easier for me to play my own lead because it is never wrong and it sounds great every time. But do we want to start a Em blues solo at the 12th fret again? Some say you play what you feel, I say you feel what you know. Pick on Grain

Hello,I was reading one of your posts was wondering if you ever got that blues thing down? The blues style is pretty hard.I hear everyone say that the blues are easy,I dont think so.
Lay down sally is played in the key of A
And the whole solo is pretty much box 1
Would it be harder to add more color, more boxes.
more options.
I think that by playing 1 box you have to manipulate, bend, wide wide, full 1 1/2 fret bends. That is some work.
Where as being able to move to different locations in search of other ideas for me is the way to go.
The main reason,my fingers will not last all day playing the blues.lol Pick On Grain

In addition to learning and playing the five pentatonic shapes, also learn the mixolydian mode which works great in blues solos. Simply put, the mixolydian mode is your basic scale with the second last note before the octave moved back one fret. ie. instead of plating c d e f g a b & C play c d e f g a Bb(flat) then C.
